Hommage à Tunde–A Story of Empowerment and Hope Through Chess

Introduction to Hommage à Tunde: A Tribute to Tunde Onakoya and Chess in Slums

In the heart of Lagos, amidst the bustling streets and underprivileged neighbourhoods, an extraordinary vision began to take shape: a vision to empower children and open doors to new opportunities through the game of chess. This vision belongs to Tunde Onakoya (link to Wikipedia), a Nigerian chess master and philanthropist, whose Chess in Slums initiative has transformed the lives of many children living in impoverished communities.

As an artist and advocate, I felt a deep connection to Tunde’s mission. In May 2024, I had the honor of hosting Tunde in Helsinki, where he joined us for the Nigeria Day event. During this visit, I unveiled a painting that I created in his honor, fully titled “Chess in Slums – Hommage à Tunde.” This piece is not only a tribute to Tunde’s work but also a means to support the Chess in Slums initiative, as the proceeds from its sale will go towards funding this inspiring program.

Who is Tunde Onakoya?

Tunde Onakoya is a chess player, but more. Tunde is a symbol of resilience and hope. Growing up in a slum, the modest surroundings of Ikorodu, Lagos, Tunde discovered chess in the most unlikely of places—a barber’s shop. Despite financial hardships, he pursued his passion, eventually becoming one of Nigeria’s top chess players and a mentor to countless children. Through his work with Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde has used chess as a tool for social change, empowering young people with critical thinking skills, discipline, and confidence.

The impact of his work has been huge. As of June 2021, Chess in Slums Africa had already trained over 200 children and secured lifelong scholarships for 20 of them. Tunde’s ultimate goal is to reach 1 million children in slum communities within five years, giving them the tools to envision a brighter future.

The Vision Behind Chess in Slums Arfica

The mission of Chess in Slums (link to homepage) is rooted in the belief that every child, regardless of their background, deserves a chance to succeed. Chess serves as a medium to teach academic and life skills, including strategy, patience, and decision-making. Through partnerships with local and international organizations, Chess in Slums continues to expand its reach, providing hope and resources to children who otherwise may not have access to such opportunities.

As Tunde himself once said, “Finding chess gave me something. It gave me an identity, an intellectual one, and it made me believe that I could also be a thinker.” This sentiment reflects the heart of the program, which sees chess as a gateway to empowerment and a means to break the cycle of poverty.

The Story Behind Hommage à Tunde

The painting, “Chess in Slums – Hommage à Tunde,” was inspired by Tunde’s remarkable journey and the lives he has touched. Created using a mix of acrylic paint and real textiles, this piece represents the vibrant and challenging world in which Tunde works.

The collage-like composition captures moments from the lives of young players deeply engaged in the game of chess, with Tunde himself appearing in the background, overseeing the scene with an intense gaze of dedication and care.

In the painting, Tunde’s slogan, “It is possible to do great things from a small place,” is subtly woven into the scene, reminding viewers of the power of resilience and vision. This piece is intended not only to celebrate Tunde’s achievements but also to spark conversations about social change and inspire support for Chess in Slums.

Techniques and Artistic Choices

The painting blends realistic figures with expressive textures to create a layered narrative that feels both personal and universal. The use of bold colors, especially in the textiles, evokes the warmth and vitality of Nigerian culture. The incorporation of chess motifs and Tunde’s likeness provides context, while the textured surfaces add depth, symbolizing the complexities of life in these communities.

Moments from the journey

The choice of acrylic and textiles speaks to the adaptability and resourcefulness embodied by the children and mentors involved in Chess in Slums. Just as they repurpose the tools around them for learning and growth, the artwork repurposes materials to create a story rich in texture and meaning.

Supporting Chess in Slums Through Art

As part of our collaboration with Tunde, the proceeds from the sale of Hommage à Tunde will be directed toward supporting the Chess in Slums initiative. At its best, it is more than a painting, rather a bridge that connects communities across continents, using art and chess to inspire hope and transformation. By purchasing or supporting this work, you are contributing to a mission that aims to uplift countless young lives.

Closing Thoughts: The Legacy of Chess and Art

Hommage à Tunde represents the power of art and chess to inspire, transform, and unite. Through this painting, I hope to honor Tunde’s legacy and the resilience of the children he mentors. It is a reminder that no matter where we come from, we all have the potential to make a difference.
